High 5 gels and 1 jelly bean every 5km :)
What year was your first triathlon?
4 February 2012 Caloundra Tri just remember jumping in for swim and landing straight onto rocks cutting my feet then spending the whole ride thinking I have blood in my new bike shoes haha
Favourite Race: And Why?
No question Ironman Port Mac 2 May 2014. My first Ironman race and felt a million dollars the entire time. Was scared going into it having less than ideal prep after being put in hospital in January for a week and having the entire month of February off on bed rest.
Id been coughing up a lung for years despite my fitness; and resembled the cough of a heavy smoker. Id finally started to see a specialist and had gone in to hospital to get a VQ test. I remember my Dr telling me in the consultation “Im sending you for a VQ scan to see if your problems are caused by a PE, I highly doubt it but at least we can rule it out.” They did the scan and then told me to go to my next test but to come straight back. The nurses were looking at me very oddly and asking if I was ok.
I came back and was told I needed to visit another part of the hospital but I would be escorted. All of a sudden a man with a wheel chair came around the corner and told me to jump in. I laughed and said “I can walk you know” and he said “No I'm under strict instructions”. Next minute they wheel me into a room that only contained two chairs and a table with a tissue box in the middle. (Hmmm this should be interesting). The scans showed I had blood clots on my left lung which was scary. My reaction wasn't anything you'd expect when being confronted with a serious and potentially deadly condition. I was cool calm and collected the first thing I said was “So the 3 hr bike ride I did yesterday probably wasn't real good?” to which the Dr replied “OMG”. My only question was “ I'm meant to do an Ironman in May can I still do it?”………That Dr said no but 2 others said yes so I figured 2 out of 3 isn't bad!
Dream Race: And Why?
I know almost everyone who is asked this question will say Kona. But honestly I don’t really think this has crossed my mind; maybe it’s due to my lack of speed, (What you have to qualify for this thing!) My Dream race would be a Ironman distance race that had all my training buddies in it.
How do you push through the pain:
My first Marathon was the single most painful race Ive ever done. I was completely busted at 22km, classic rookie error running way to fast at start and pulling my left achilles and right hamstring. I was in a extreme amount of pain and being extremely negative and have never wanted to give up so badly, even the ‘You looked stuffed van’ asked me If I wanted to jump in. I seriously considered jumping in that van and GIVING UP but all I could think of was all the people I told I was doing a marathon (Why did I tell so many bloody people?!?!?) and how they would all ask me how I went, and I would have to tell them all my sad and sorry story of how I gave up! So tell everyone you know what race your doing be it the post man a client, friends and family that way you feel accountable for not letting any one of those people down, they are looking up to you; prove it to them and yourself that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
Dinner for 4, who’s coming:
My nearest and dearest.
Favourite Quote:
Pain is temporary memories last forever
