What year was your first triathlon?
2007, baby sprint in Geelong
Favourite Race: And Why?
So many!!! I love the Elwood Gatorade sprint; it’s where I started racing and it’s on my home turf. I always love going to Portarlington as it’s a nice flat swim and a beautiful, peaceful place but the locals are really supportive. For long distance Challenge Melbourne is a fast and scenic course.
Dream Race: And Why?
Ironman Melbourne. Doing a full Ironman has been on my bucket list since starting triathlon. Back then it was a dream to just finish but now there’s a time in mind ;) I love Melbourne and believe I live in the perfect spot for training and racing. The race finishes 500m from my house so I can’t wait to run home!
How do you push through the pain:
There’s a fantastic line in ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall where an ultra marathon runner refers to pain as the ‘beast’. She looks forward to the beast turning up because every time it does she gets stronger at dealing with him and defeating him. I convince myself I’m looking forward to it and I know how to beat it!!!
Dinner for 4, who’s coming:
Craig Alexandra (what a wealth of knowledge and experience), Mirinda Carfrae (she’s so natural, honest and I could imagine us being best friends, ha!), Haruki Murakami (to learn more about his meditations and applying this to mindfulness in sport), Christopher McDougall (to learn more about the science and evolution of human movement)
Favourite Quote:
‘There are so many people out there that will tell you that you can’t. What you’ve got to do is turn around as say, I can. Watch me.’ – Layne Beachley
You’re the CEO of the World Triathlon Corporation, what is your first order of business?
Give more money to the pros who work so hard to inspire us all. They all deserve a greater contribution to their livelihood.
Next 12 Months looks like:
Western Sydney 70.3, Auckland 70.3, then my dream race! Ironman Melbourne. Once that’s done who knows!
