Name: Greg McDermott
Age Group: 30-34 Male
Home State: NSW. There’s other states?
Race Bike Setup
Felt F3, SRAM Red Groupset and my Favourite piece of equipment ENVE 6.7 wheelset. Thanks to my mates at Iride Bikes Melbourne. Profile bars and a trusty specialised saddle because you don’t want to be going numb there at mile 60.
Squad or/and Coach
Squad/Coach?? Whats that? They cost money right?? Money I can spend on events and stuff!
Planning to get some structure for 2015. Flying by the guidance of google for 2 Ironmans can have its pros and cons I guess.
Run Nutrition
Bad Day(most days) Whatever the hell is on the course at times. Watermelon, jelly beans, bonk breaker, vegemite, cake, whatever any volunteer has in their hands!
Good Day(few and far between) Endura Gel and Cliff Bars depending on distance
What year was your first triathlon?
I think it was 2004. Don’t really remember but it was a sprint race at Kurnell in the summer sprint series. Freaked out in the swim and must’ve been the only guy out there in dickstickers. Crunched the ride and couldn’t understand why no one was riding in groups and thinking these guys are bloody idiots!! Grab a wheel son. I could run at the time and thought of myself as being a bit of an athlete but holy shit it hurt. Was a baptism of fire to a sport I had zero respect for before that day. That day I decided I was going to do Kona! 10 Years later and many dreams later Im now having a crack.
Favourite Race: And Why?
Melbourne Ironman 2014. My first ever Ironman. Put 14 months of work into it. I had a handicap to overcome to start. I weighed 110kgs when I entered and spent the first 5 months getting back to 81kgs. Absolutely loved every minute of the whole experience. Felt like a pro(up until the race started of course) It was seriously the best thing I’ve ever done and I am totally hooked now.
Dream Race: And Why?
There’s only one. Kona. 2016 is the year. Its clearly the pinnacle of the sport and what some say is the hardest one day event on the planet. I tend to agree. I first saw the one and only Darryl Eastlake commentating on the race on a segment on Wide World of Sports when I was a kid. The images of the Iron War, The finishline crawls and the extreme conditions have it on my to do list soon. There’s been many nights over the past 10 years that I’ve gone to sleep thinking about the finish chute of this race. I’ve watched every year of that race at least 10 times over. I think at times April thinks I’m a weirdo but hey.
How do you push through the pain?
Grit the teeth, focus on the next step and think about that finishline. I always heard that you need to beat yourself 100 times in an Ironman before you beat anyone else. I think it’s more like 300 but holy shit that last few hundred metres is addictive.
Dinner for 4, who’s coming?
Tiger Woods – A good dinner must have some stories. I’d actually like to talk to him about how mental focus and performance are so tightly aligned and how not being on 100% mentally had such an incredibly detrimental effect on his performance…..on the golf course
Mark Zuckerberg – I want to ask one question……how does it feel to turn down $2 billion knowing that your business is worth triple that! Id be running so fast you wouldn’t catch me. What’s your next goal Mark? That would be a very interesting response
Prince Harry – How do you be the true person you want to be when the entire world is watching your every movement. How do you be real everyday. Go for a run. Get on your bike or do whatever you’re into when the world is watching.
John Joseph – A vegan Ironman athlete who is also the lead singer of 80’s punk rock band the cro-mags. This guy would add some serious spice to a good night. He’s been a heroin addict, been shot, stabbed, been homeless and turned it all around to become a published author, Ironman athlete and great member of society. He serves vegan meals to homeless people on the streets of New York so I guess he can also cover the catering for us.

You’re the CEO of the World Triathlon Corporation, what is your first order of business?
Up the prize money for the pros. Those guys build the image of the brand and the sport and get paid nothing for it. The 11th best guy and girl in the world still pay their own way to get to the World Championships and don’t even get a pay cheque!! What the hell is going on there?
Hey guys, come and build our brand and make money for us and we won’t pay you for it? I’ve been around a bit and this just simply doesn’t make sense to me.
Next 12 Months looks like
11kgs lighter. 2 more Ironmans. Qualifying for Kona 2016. A sub 3hr 30min marathon. Building Zeal2u to take over the world one fruit and veg box at a time.
