SRI LANKA, COLOMBO 70.3 - PRE RACE BLOG
AN insatiable appetite to take my athletic performance to another level here in Sri Lanka.
The preparation has been perfect again. I've had to manage fatigue much closer this time (you can clearly see this in the PMC chart below). The season is 3 months 'older', summer and heat stress was in full swing and some major initiatives are on the praecipes of announcement in my coaching business (KOA SPORTS).
I can't say I've got a great read on swimming and running, only I just trust and know it's there, it's genuinely hard to gauge when the humidity and heat is so relentless back home. I chose to run 70% of my volume in the middle of the day, knowing what to expect here in Colombo. Let's see how that stacks up on Sunday.
Chasing Vert (climbing) was a big focus for the past 12 weeks on the bike. Even though the course is flat here, I felt I needed to be able to hang in for longer. There are some serious guys who can push serious power on the start line. My critical assessment of Malaysia was that it was forward progress, but the last 15kms was a battle to sustain the level. If the last 15kms are a battle here, the front end of the race will move too far away from me.
My ambitions for this race are again a tiny bullseye. I'm aiming to break the course record, 4:06:06 (as it stands). For me, a 6 min PB required. Where that puts me overall, who knows. The defending champion and current course record holder is here to race. Doesn't get any better than that.
Colombo is a wild destination for a 70.3.
Hoping to close the say-do gap that little bit more.
Thanks for my amazing strategic partners who make this possible, International Protein, BMC Australia, Fizik, 2xu and TrainingPeaks.
I am podcasting now with my colleague Greg Mcdermott, if you want to learn more or subscribe hit this link - KOA SPORTS PODCAST.
